R&D Infrastructure

The Hydrogen Application Center offers the ideal conditions for maritime and large-scale research with its location. Surrounded by the maritime industry, close to the highly frequented Baltic Sea, and with direct access to the quay, Fraunhofer IGP has a unique location available. The area has a long history and was used for decades for the construction of large engines. A part of this traditional location will therefore continue to be used for the advancement of these technologies.

In July 2023, research operations began, initially on combustion engines. The large-scale infrastructure meets the requirements of the maritime industry and provides space for further growth. To achieve the ambitious goals of the Hydrogen Application Center, it is necessary to further expand the existing infrastructure and establish additional test benches. Plans include acquiring a multi-fuel research engine in the range of 1.0 - 1.5 MW and a fuel cell system with battery storage. The state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is providing €9.9 million for these infrastructure measures. This will create even better conditions to develop solutions for a climate-friendly maritime economy of the future in collaboration with industry.
